Currently, we are working with global brand owners and companies to bring our lead product, PEF (polyethylene furanoate), a 100% biobased alternative to PET, to the market. But FDCA is more than PEF alone, and can be applied to a wide variety of industrial plastics, including bottles, textiles, food packaging, carpets, electronic materials and automotive applications. PEF: game-changing plastic

Avantium’s lead application, PEF (polyethylene-furanoate), is a 100% biobased and recyclable polymer that can be applied to an enormous range of applications, including packaging of soft drinks, water, alcoholic beverages, fruit juices food en non-food products. PEF’s superior barrier and thermal properties are equal to and in many ways greater than conventional PET. PEF is well on its way to becoming the next generation polyester. We believe that in the near future most bottles in the typical refrigerator will be made of PEF.

PEF and beyond

In addition to our lead application PEF, Avantium is also tapping into the enormous potential of other FDCA-based polyester systems. Using FDCA-based polyester in polyurethanes, for example, produces softer foams, ideal for shoes and seats. Similarly, FDCA and FDCA-based polyester can also be used to optimize coatings and paints. For engineering applications, FDCA can be added to current systems or blended with other polymers when molding parts for cars and electronics. Moreover, FDCA-based compositions can be used to improve the temperature resistance of a polymer.
