Avantium initiates testing of first mobile Volta Technology container unit at an RWE powerplant in Germany

As part of the OCEAN project*, Avantium has sent its first mobile, container-sized CO2 conversion unit using Avantium’s Volta Technology, to RWE’s powerplant facilities, located in Niederaußem, Germany.

This pre-pilot container is an ideal way to test Avantium’s Volta Technology in real-world applications and to demonstrate the value of our CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) systems. The Volta demonstration unit was initially installed and validated at the Avantium headquarters in Amsterdam and will now be tested under industrial conditions at the site of RWE. The unit will remain at RWE, where all relevant infrastructure for experiments on semi-pilot scale is already present, till the end of June 2022.

During this 6-months period, Avantium targets to convert 250g/hour of CO2 coming directly from a capture facility located at the powerplant itself, into formate. This will in turn serve as a building block for high value products, such as plastics.

“This is an important milestone for Avantium, as this unit is a substantial scale-up from our in-lab units and an important step in our journey to the commercialisation of this technology” comments Arnaud Mol, Engineer, Volta Technology. “This will allow us to validate the potential of bringing the technology directly to customers looking to responsibly manage their CO2 waste on-site and fit these practices into their production process seamlessly.”

Avantium’s Volta team will work in close collaboration with RWE over the next weeks to get the unit set up and equip the local RWE team with the knowledge to run the unit independently.

*The OCEAN project (Oxalic acid from CO2 using Electrochemistry At demonstratioN scale) is using carbon dioxide to produce oxalic acid, which is the basis for various high-quality chemical products. High-profile international partners from industry and science are collaborating to synthesise the target products.
